Omaha Hi-Low: Basic Outline

Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha 8 or better) is often times viewed as one of the most difficult but popular poker games. It is a variation that, even more than regular Omaha poker, aims for action from every level of players. This is the chief reason why a once obscure game, has grown in acceptance so quickly.

Omaha 8 or better starts exactly like a regular game of Omaha. 4 cards are handed out to each player. A round of betting follows in which players can wager, check, or drop out. 3 cards are handed out, this is called the flop. Another sequence of wagering happens. Once all the players have in turn called or dropped out, an additional card is revealed on the turn. a further sequence of betting ensues and then the river card is flipped. The gamblers will need to put together the best high and low five card hands based on the board and hole cards.

This is where many entrants get flustered. Contrasted to Holdem, in which the board can be every player’s hand, in Omaha hi lo the player must use exactly three cards from the board, and exactly 2 cards from their hand. Not a single card more, not a single card less. Unlike normal Omaha, there are 2 ways a pot could be won: the "high hand" or the "low hand."

A high hand is just how it sounds. It’s the best hand out of everyone’s, it doesn’t matter if it is a straight, flush, full house. It is the same notion in nearly all poker games.

The low hand is more difficult, but certainly opens up the play. When determining a low hand, straights and flushes do not count. the lowest hand is the worst hand that could be put together, with the lowest value being made up of A-2-3-4-5. Considering that straights and flushes do not count, A-2-3-4-5 is the lowest value hand possible. The lower hand is any 5 card hand (unpaired) with an eight and smaller. The low hand takes half of the pot, as does the higher hand. When there’s no low hand presented, the higher hand wins the whole pot.

It may seem complicated at the outset, following a couple of rounds you will be agile enough to pick up on the basic nuances of play with ease. Since you have players betting for the low and wagering for the high, and seeing as so many cards are in play, Omaha 8 or better offers an overwhelming assortment of betting choices and owing to the fact that you have several individuals trying for the high, as well as many shooting for the low. If you love a game with a plethora of outs and actions, it is worth your time to participate in Omaha/8.
