Omaha Hi-Lo: Basic Overview
Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha 8 or better) is frequently seen as one of the most complex but well-loved poker games. It is a variation that, even more than normal Omaha poker, invites action from all levels of players. This is the primary reason why a once obscure game, has increased in popularity so amazingly.
Omaha 8 or better begins just like a normal game of Omaha. 4 cards are given out to each player. A round of wagering ensues where gamblers can wager, check, or fold. Three cards are handed out, this is referred to as the flop. Another sequence of betting happens. After all the gamblers have either called or dropped out, an additional card is revealed on the turn. an additional round of wagering ensues and then the river card is revealed. The gamblers will need to make the best high and low 5 card hands based on the board and hole cards.
This is where a few players often get flustered. Contrasted to Texas Holdem, in which the board can be everyone’s hand, in Omaha hi low the player has to use exactly three cards from the board, and precisely 2 hole cards. No more, not a single card less. Unlike regular Omaha, there are 2 ways a pot might be won: the "higher hand" or the "low hand."
A high hand is just how it sounds. It is the strongest possible hand out of every player’s, whether that is a straight, flush, full house, etc. It is the very same concept in just about all poker games.
The low hand is more complicated, but certainly opens up the action. When determining a low hand, straights and flushes do not count. A low hand is the worst hand that might be put together, with the worst being A-2-3-4-5. Considering that straights and flushes do not count, A-2-3-4-5 is the worst possible hand. The lower hand is any 5 card hand (unpaired) with an eight and below. The lower hand takes half of the pot, as just like the high hand. When there is no low hand available, the high hand wins the entire pot.
Although it seems complicated initially, following a few rounds you will be able to pick up on the base nuances of the game easily enough. Since you have individuals wagering for the low and wagering for the high, and since such a large number of cards are in play, Omaha 8 or better offers an overwhelming range of wagering choices and owing to the fact that you have several individuals battling for the high, and many battling for the low. If you like a game with a plethora of outs and actions, it’s not a waste of your time to participate in Omaha 8 or better.
