Omaha Hi Lo: Basic Summary
Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha 8 or better) is commonly viewed as one of the most complex but popular poker games. It’s a variation that, even more than regular Omaha poker, invites action from every level of players. This is the main reason why a once obscure game, has grown in popularity so amazingly.
Omaha 8 or better starts exactly like a regular game of Omaha. Four cards are given out to every player. A round of wagering follows where gamblers can bet, check, or fold. 3 cards are dealt out, this is called the flop. One more round of wagering ensues. After all the players have either called or dropped out, an additional card is revealed on the turn. a further sequence of betting follows and then the river card is revealed. The gamblers must attempt to make the strongest high and low 5 card hands using the board and hole cards.
This is the point where a few players get flustered. Contrasted to Hold’em, in which the board can make up everyone’s hand, in Omaha hi low the player has to utilize precisely 3 cards from the board, and precisely two cards from their hand. No more, no less. Unlike regular Omaha, there are two ways a pot can be won: the "high hand" or the "lower hand."
A high hand is exactly what it sounds like. It’s the best hand out of everyone’s, whether that is a straight, flush, full house. It is the same notion in nearly every poker game.
The lower hand is more difficult, but really free’s up the action. When deciding on a low hand, straights and flushes do not count. A low hand is the weakest hand that could be put together, with the lowest being A-2-3-4-5. Considering that straights and flushes do not count, A-2-3-4-5 is the worst possible hand. The low hand is any 5 card hand (unpaired) with an eight and lower. The lower hand wins half of the pot, as does the high hand. When there is no lower hand presented, the higher hand wins the complete pot.
Although it seems difficult initially, after a few hands you will be agile enough to pick up on the fundamental nuances of the game with ease. Since you have people wagering for the low and wagering for the high, and seeing as so many cards are in play, Omaha hi lo offers an amazing assortment of betting options and owing to the fact that you have numerous individuals battling for the high, and a few battling for the low hand.
