Omaha Hi Lo: Basic Summary
Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha 8 or better) is frequently seen as one of the most difficult but popular poker variations. It’s a variation that, even more than regular Omaha poker, aims for action from every level of players. This is the main reason why a once obscure variation, has grown in acceptance so amazingly.
Omaha 8 or better begins just like a normal game of Omaha. Four cards are handed out to each player. A sequence of betting follows where players can wager, check, or fold. Three cards are dealt out, this is called the flop. One more round of betting ensues. Once all the gamblers have in turn called or dropped out, an additional card is revealed on the turn. Another round of betting follows at which point the river card is revealed. The gamblers will have to make the best high and low five card hands based on the board and hole cards.
This is where some players get flustered. Unlike Texas Holdem, where the board can be every player’s hand, in Omaha hi/low the player has to utilize exactly three cards from the board, and exactly 2 hole cards. Not a single card more, not a single card less. Contrary to regular Omaha, there are 2 ways a pot may be won: the "high hand" or the "lower hand."
A high hand is just what it sounds like. It is the best possible hand out of everyone’s, regardless if it is a straight, flush, full house, etc. It’s the very same notion in almost every poker game.
The lower hand is more complex, but really free’s up the play. When determining a low hand, straights and flushes don’t count. the lowest hand is the weakest hand that might be made, with the lowest being made up of A-2-3-4-5. Since straights and flushes don’t count, A-2-3-4-5 is the worst possible hand. The low hand is any 5 card hand (unpaired) with an eight and below. The low hand wins half of the pot, as just like the high hand. When there’s no lower hand presented, the higher hand wins the whole pot.
It may seem difficult at first, following a few rounds you will be agile enough to pick up on the fundamental nuances of the game simply enough. Since you have individuals betting for the low and wagering for the high, and since so many cards are in play, Omaha hi-low offers an overwhelming assortment of betting possibilities and owing to the fact that you have many individuals trying for the high, and several shooting for the low.
