Omaha Hi-Low: Fundamental Outline

Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha/8 or better) is often times viewed as one of the most complicated but well-loved poker games. It’s a game that, even more than normal Omaha poker, aims for play from all levels of players. This is the main reason why a once invisible game, has grown in acceptance so amazingly.

Omaha 8 or better starts like a regular game of Omaha. Four cards are handed out to every player. A sequence of betting ensues in which gamblers can bet, check, or fold. Three cards are given out, this is called the flop. One more sequence of betting ensues. Once all the players have in turn called or folded, an additional card is revealed on the turn. Another round of betting ensues at which point the river card is revealed. The gamblers will have to make the strongest high and low five card hands using the board and hole cards.

This is the point where a few entrants can get confused. Contrasted to Texas Holdem, in which the board can make up every player’s hand, in Omaha Hi-Lo the player has to use exactly 3 cards on the board, and exactly 2 cards from their hand. No more, no less. Contrary to normal Omaha, there are two ways a pot might be won: the "higher hand" or the "lower hand."

A high hand is exactly how it sounds. It is the best hand out of everyone’s, it doesn’t matter if it is a straight, flush, full house. It is the very same approach in almost all poker games.

A lower hand is more complex, but really free’s up the play. When deciding on a low hand, straights and flushes don’t count. the lowest hand is the worst hand that can be made, with the lowest value being A-2-3-4-5. Because straights and flushes don’t count, A-2-3-4-5 is the worst possible hand. The lower hand is any five card hand (unpaired) with an 8 and smaller. The low hand takes half of the pot, as does the higher hand. When there is no low hand available, the high hand wins the whole pot.

It may seem complex at first, after a couple of hands you will be agile enough to pick up on the base subtleties of the game simply enough. Seeing as you have people betting for the low and betting for the high, and seeing as such a large number of cards are being used at the same time, Omaha hi low provides an exciting collection of wagering options and seeing that you have numerous players trying for the high hand, along with many shooting for the low hand. If you love a game with a plethora of outs and actions, it is worth your time to participate in Omaha High-Low.
