Omaha Hi-Lo: General Outline
Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha 8 or better) is commonly viewed as one of the most complicated but popular poker variations. It’s a variation that, even more than regular Omaha poker, aims for action from all levels of players. This is the chief reason why a once obscure game, has grown in popularity so rapidly.
Omaha 8 or better begins just like a regular game of Omaha. Four cards are given out to every player. A round of wagering follows in which players can bet, check, or fold. 3 cards are handed out, this is referred to as the flop. Another sequence of betting ensues. After all the gamblers have in turn called or dropped out, an additional card is flipped on the turn. Another round of betting follows and then the river card is flipped. The entrants will have to make the strongest high and low five card hands using the board and hole cards.
This is where some entrants get baffled. Contrasted to Texas Hold ‘Em, in which the board can make up everyone’s hand, in Omaha hi/low the player has to use exactly 3 cards from the board, and precisely two cards from their hand. No more, no less. Contrary to normal Omaha, there are 2 ways a pot might be won: the "higher hand" or the "lower hand."
A high hand is just what it sounds like. It is the best hand out of everyone’s, it doesn’t matter if it is a straight, flush, full house. It is the identical approach in just about all poker games.
A lower hand is more difficult, but certainly opens up the play. When determining a low hand, straights and flushes do not count. A low hand is the weakest hand that can be made, with the lowest being A-2-3-4-5. Considering that straights and flushes do not count, A-2-3-4-5 is the lowest value hand possible. The low hand is any five card hand (unpaired) with an 8 and smaller. The low hand wins half of the pot, as just like the high hand. When there’s no lower hand available, the high hand wins the complete pot.
It may seem difficult at first, after a few hands you will be agile enough to pick up on the basic nuances of play easily enough. Since you have people wagering for the low and wagering for the high, and seeing as such a large number of cards are in play, Omaha Hi-Lo offers an amazing range of wagering options and seeing that you have several individuals trying for the high, along with a few shooting for the low hand.
