Omaha Hi Lo: Fundamental Summary
Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha/8 or better) is commonly viewed as one of the most complicated but well-loved poker games. It’s a game that, even more than regular Omaha poker, invites play from all levels of players. This is the main reason why a once irrelevant variation, has expanded in acceptance so rapidly.
Omaha 8 or better starts just like a regular game of Omaha. 4 cards are given out to every player. A round of wagering follows where players can wager, check, or drop out. Three cards are dealt out, this is called the flop. Another sequence of betting ensues. After all the gamblers have in turn called or dropped out, a further card is flipped on the turn. Another round of betting ensues and then the river card is flipped. The players will need to put together the best high and low 5 card hands using the board and hole cards.
This is the point where a number of players often get flustered. Unlike Texas Hold ‘Em, in which the board can make up every player’s hand, in Omaha Hi-Lo the player has to utilize exactly 3 cards from the board, and precisely two cards from their hand. Not a single card more, not a single card less. Contrary to normal Omaha, there are 2 ways a pot might be won: the "higher hand" or the "low hand."
A high hand is just what it sounds like. It is the best possible hand out of everyone’s, whether that is a straight, flush, full house. It is the very same concept in almost every poker game.
A low hand is more complicated, but really opens up the action. When deciding on a low hand, straights and flushes do not count. the lowest hand is the weakest hand that can be made, with the lowest value being A-2-3-4-5. Because straights and flushes don’t count, A-2-3-4-5 is the lowest value hand possible. The lower hand is any five card hand (unpaired) with an eight and smaller. The low hand wins half of the pot, as does the higher hand. When there is no low hand presented, the higher hand wins the whole pot.
It may seem complicated at the start, following a few hands you will be agile enough to pick up on the basic nuances of play simply enough. Since you have individuals betting for the low and betting for the high, and seeing as such a large number of cards are in play, Omaha/8 provides an amazing range of betting choices and owing to the fact that you have several individuals trying for the high hand, and many trying for the low.
