Omaha Hi Lo: Basic Overview
Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha/8 or better) is commonly viewed as one of the most difficult but favored poker games. It is a game that, even more than normal Omaha poker, invites action from all levels of players. This is the primary reason why a once invisible game, has grown in popularity so quickly.
Omaha hi low starts like a normal game of Omaha. 4 cards are handed out to every player. A sequence of wagering follows in which gamblers can wager, check, or drop out. Three cards are given out, this is called the flop. A further sequence of betting happens. Once all the gamblers have either called or dropped out, another card is revealed on the turn. a further sequence of betting ensues and then the river card is flipped. The players will have to put together the strongest high and low five card hands based on the board and hole cards.
This is the point where a number of players can get confused. Contrasted to Texas Hold ‘Em, in which the board can be every player’s hand, in Omaha hi/lo the player has to utilize exactly three cards on the board, and exactly 2 cards from their hand. No more, no less. Unlike normal Omaha, there are two ways a pot could be won: the "higher hand" or the "low hand."
A high hand is just how it sounds. It’s the best hand out of everyone’s, whether that is a straight, flush, full house. It’s the same concept in just about every poker game.
A lower hand is more complex, but really free’s up the play. When deciding on a low hand, straights and flushes don’t count. the lowest hand is the weakest hand that can be made, with the lowest being made up of A-2-3-4-5. Considering that straights and flushes do not count, A-2-3-4-5 is the smallest value hand possible. The lower hand is any five card hand (unpaired) with an eight and below. The low hand takes half of the pot, as just like the high hand. When there is no lower hand presented, the high hand takes the entire pot.
It may seem difficult at the start, following a couple of rounds you will be able to pick up on the base nuances of play simply enough. Since you have individuals wagering for the low and wagering for the high, and seeing as such a large number of cards are in play, Omaha 8 or better provides an amazing collection of betting possibilities and seeing that you have numerous players trying for the high hand, along with a few battling for the low hand.
