Omaha Hi Low: Basic Summary
Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha 8 or better) is often times seen as one of the most complex but popular poker games. It’s a game that, even more than normal Omaha poker, invites action from every level of players. This is the primary reason why a once irrelevant game, has expanded in popularity so rapidly.
Omaha/8 begins just like a normal game of Omaha. 4 cards are given out to each player. A sequence of wagering ensues in which gamblers can bet, check, or fold. Three cards are dealt out, this is referred to as the flop. One more round of wagering happens. Once all the players have either called or folded, another card is revealed on the turn. an additional round of wagering happens at which point the river card is revealed. The entrants will need to put together the best high and low 5 card hands using the board and hole cards.
This is where a number of players can get confused. Contrasted to Texas Hold ‘Em, in which the board can make up every player’s hand, in Omaha hi/lo the player must utilize exactly three cards on the board, and exactly 2 cards from their hand. No more, not a single card less. Unlike normal Omaha, there are 2 ways a pot could be won: the "higher hand" or the "low hand."
A high hand is just how it sounds. It’s the best hand out of every player’s, it doesn’t matter if it is a straight, flush, full house. It’s the same notion in almost all poker games.
The lower hand is more complicated, but certainly opens up the action. When determining a low hand, straights and flushes do not count. the lowest hand is the worst hand that can be made, with the lowest value being made up of A-2-3-4-5. Seeing as straights and flushes don’t count, A-2-3-4-5 is the lowest possible hand. The low hand is any 5 card hand (unpaired) with an 8 and smaller. The low hand takes half of the pot, as does the higher hand. When there’s no low hand presented, the high hand wins the complete pot.
Although it seems difficult at the start, after a couple of rounds you will be able to get the base subtleties of play simply enough. Seeing as you have individuals wagering for the low and betting for the high, and since such a large number of cards are being used at once, Omaha/8 offers an amazing assortment of betting possibilities and seeing that you have numerous players battling for the high, along with many trying for the low. If you enjoy a game with a lot of outs and actions, it is worth your time to play Omaha hi-low.
