Omaha Hi Lo: Basic Overview
Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha/8 or better) is often times viewed as one of the most complex but favored poker variations. It is a variation that, even more than regular Omaha poker, aims for action from every level of players. This is the primary reason why a once obscure variation, has increased in popularity so rapidly.
Omaha 8 or better starts just like a normal game of Omaha. Four cards are dealt to each player. A sequence of wagering follows in which gamblers can bet, check, or fold. 3 cards are handed out, this is referred to as the flop. Another round of betting ensues. After all the players have in turn called or dropped out, a further card is flipped on the turn. a further round of betting ensues at which point the river card is flipped. The gamblers will have to make the strongest high and low 5 card hands using the board and hole cards.
This is where a few entrants can get flustered. Unlike Texas Holdem, where the board can be every player’s hand, in Omaha hi-low the player has to use precisely three cards from the board, and precisely two cards from their hand. No more, no less. Contrary to normal Omaha, there are two ways a pot might be won: the "higher hand" or the "low hand."
A high hand is just how it sounds. It’s the best possible hand out of every player’s, regardless if it is a straight, flush, full house, etc. It’s the very same approach in almost all poker games.
The lower hand is more complicated, but really opens up the action. When figuring out a low hand, straights and flushes do not count. the lowest hand is the worst hand that can be put together, with the lowest value being A-2-3-4-5. Considering that straights and flushes don’t count, A-2-3-4-5 is the lowest possible hand. The low hand is any five card hand (unpaired) with an 8 and below. The lower hand takes half of the pot, as just like the higher hand. When there’s no lower hand presented, the higher hand takes the complete pot.
It may seem difficult at the start, following a couple of rounds you will be agile enough to pick up on the base subtleties of play with ease. Seeing as you have people wagering for the low and wagering for the high, and since so many cards are in play, Omaha 8 or better offers an exciting array of betting possibilities and owing to the fact that you have many individuals shooting for the high, and many battling for the low hand. If you love a game with all kinds of outs and actions, it is not a waste of your time to participate in Omaha 8 or better.
