Omaha Hi-Low: General Summary
Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha/8 or better) is frequently seen as one of the most complicated but popular poker variations. It’s a variation that, even more than regular Omaha poker, aims for action from every level of players. This is the primary reason why a once irrelevant variation, has grown in popularity so rapidly.
Omaha 8 or better starts like a normal game of Omaha. Four cards are dealt to every player. A round of wagering ensues in which players can bet, check, or fold. Three cards are given out, this is known as the flop. A further sequence of wagering ensues. Once all the gamblers have in turn called or dropped out, another card is flipped on the turn. an additional round of betting happens and then the river card is revealed. The gamblers must attempt to make the strongest high and low 5 card hands based on the board and hole cards.
This is where some entrants often get confused. Unlike Hold’em, where the board can make up every player’s hand, in Omaha hi/low the player must use exactly three cards on the board, and precisely two cards from their hand. No more, not a single card less. Unlike regular Omaha, there are two ways a pot can be won: the "higher hand" or the "low hand."
A high hand is just how it sounds. It is the best possible hand out of everyone’s, it doesn’t matter if it is a straight, flush, full house, etc. It is the very same notion in almost every poker game.
A lower hand is more difficult, but certainly free’s up the action. When determining a low hand, straights and flushes do not count. A low hand is the worst hand that might be put together, with the lowest value being made up of A-2-3-4-5. Seeing as straights and flushes don’t count, A-2-3-4-5 is the smallest value hand possible. The low hand is any 5 card hand (unpaired) with an eight and lower. The low hand takes half of the pot, as does the higher hand. When there is no low hand available, the higher hand wins the entire pot.
Although it seems complicated initially, after a couple of hands you will be able to pick up on the fundamental nuances of play simply enough. Seeing as you have players betting for the low and betting for the high, and seeing as such a large number of cards are in play, Omaha High-Low offers an amazing assortment of betting choices and because you have several players battling for the high hand, along with several battling for the low hand.
