Omaha Hi/Low: General Summary

Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha 8 or better) is commonly seen as one of the most complicated but well-loved poker variations. It’s a variation that, even more than regular Omaha poker, aims for action from every level of players. This is the chief reason why a once irrelevant variation, has grown in popularity so rapidly.

Omaha hi lo begins exactly like a normal game of Omaha. Four cards are dealt to every player. A round of wagering ensues where players can wager, check, or fold. 3 cards are dealt out, this is called the flop. A further sequence of betting happens. Once all the players have either called or folded, another card is revealed on the turn. a further sequence of betting happens and then the river card is revealed. The players will have to make the best high and low 5 card hands based on the board and hole cards.

This is where a number of entrants get confused. Unlike Holdem, in which the board can make up every player’s hand, in Omaha hi/low the player has to use precisely three cards from the board, and precisely two hole cards. No more, not a single card less. Contrary to regular Omaha, there are two ways a pot may be won: the "higher hand" or the "low hand."

A high hand is just what it sounds like. It’s the strongest possible hand out of every player’s, it doesn’t matter if it is a straight, flush, full house. It’s the same concept in almost every poker game.

A lower hand is more complex, but really free’s up the play. When deciding on a low hand, straights and flushes do not count. the lowest hand is the worst hand that can be put together, with the lowest being made up of A-2-3-4-5. Seeing as straights and flushes do not count, A-2-3-4-5 is the smallest value hand possible. The low hand is any 5 card hand (unpaired) with an 8 and below. The low hand takes half of the pot, as just like the higher hand. When there is no lower hand presented, the high hand wins the whole pot.

It may seem complex at the start, after a couple of hands you will be able to get the basic subtleties of play easily enough. Seeing as you have people wagering for the low and betting for the high, and since such a large number of cards are being used at the same time, Omaha 8 or better offers an exciting array of betting choices and seeing that you have many individuals shooting for the high, as well as many shooting for the low. If you like a game with all kinds of outs and actions, it is not a waste of your time to participate in Omaha/8.
