Omaha Hi-Lo: General Overview

Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha/8 or better) is often times viewed as one of the most complex but popular poker variations. It’s a variation that, even more than normal Omaha poker, aims for action from every level of players. This is the main reason why a once obscure game, has increased in popularity so rapidly.

Omaha 8 or better begins just like a normal game of Omaha. 4 cards are handed out to each player. A sequence of betting ensues in which players can wager, check, or drop out. 3 cards are handed out, this is referred to as the flop. Another sequence of betting ensues. Once all the gamblers have either called or folded, an additional card is revealed on the turn. Another sequence of betting follows at which point the river card is flipped. The gamblers will have to put together the strongest high and low 5 card hands based on the board and hole cards.

This is the point where a few entrants often get baffled. Contrasted to Texas Hold ‘Em, where the board can be every player’s hand, in Omaha hi low the player has to utilize exactly 3 cards from the board, and exactly two cards from their hand. No more, no less. Contrary to normal Omaha, there are two ways a pot might be won: the "higher hand" or the "low hand."

A high hand is just what it sounds like. It’s the strongest hand out of every player’s, it doesn’t matter if it is a straight, flush, full house. It’s the same approach in nearly all poker games.

A lower hand is more difficult, but certainly opens up the play. When determining a low hand, straights and flushes do not count. the lowest hand is the worst hand that might be put together, with the lowest being A-2-3-4-5. Seeing as straights and flushes do not count, A-2-3-4-5 is the worst possible hand. The low hand is any five card hand (unpaired) with an 8 and lower. The lower hand wins half of the pot, as does the higher hand. When there’s no low hand presented, the high hand wins the entire pot.

While it seems complex initially, after a few rounds you will be able to pick up on the fundamental nuances of the game simply enough. Seeing as you have individuals betting for the low and betting for the high, and since so many cards are in play, Omaha High-Low provides an exciting collection of wagering possibilities and because you have many individuals trying for the high, and several battling for the low. If you love a game with a considerable amount of outs and actions, it is not a waste of your time to compete in Omaha 8 or better.
