Omaha Hi/Lo: General Summary
Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha 8 or better) is frequently seen as one of the most difficult but favored poker variations. It’s a game that, even more than normal Omaha poker, invites action from every level of players. This is the main reason why a once obscure game, has increased in popularity so rapidly.
Omaha hi low begins just like a normal game of Omaha. 4 cards are given out to each player. A round of betting follows where gamblers can bet, check, or fold. 3 cards are given out, this is called the flop. One more round of wagering happens. After all the players have in turn called or dropped out, a further card is revealed on the turn. an additional sequence of betting follows and then the river card is flipped. The gamblers must attempt to put together the strongest high and low five card hands using the board and hole cards.
This is where a number of players can get baffled. Unlike Holdem, where the board can be every player’s hand, in Omaha Hi-Lo the player must use precisely three cards on the board, and exactly two hole cards. Not a single card more, not a single card less. Contrary to normal Omaha, there are 2 ways a pot may be won: the "higher hand" or the "low hand."
A high hand is exactly how it sounds. It’s the strongest hand out of everyone’s, it doesn’t matter if it is a straight, flush, full house, etc. It’s the very same notion in almost all poker games.
A lower hand is more difficult, but really free’s up the play. When deciding on a low hand, straights and flushes don’t count. A low hand is the worst hand that can be put together, with the lowest being made up of A-2-3-4-5. Considering that straights and flushes do not count, A-2-3-4-5 is the worst possible hand. The lower hand is any five card hand (unpaired) with an 8 and below. The low hand takes half of the pot, as just like the high hand. When there’s no low hand presented, the high hand wins the complete pot.
Although it seems complex at the outset, after a couple of hands you will be agile enough to pick up on the basic nuances of the game with ease.
