Omaha Hi-Lo: Fundamental Outline
Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha 8 or better) is frequently viewed as one of the most difficult but well-loved poker variations. It’s a game that, even more than regular Omaha poker, invites action from all levels of players. This is the main reason why a once invisible game, has increased in acceptance so rapidly.
Omaha 8 or better starts like a normal game of Omaha. Four cards are given out to each player. A round of betting follows where gamblers can bet, check, or fold. 3 cards are given out, this is known as the flop. A further sequence of betting ensues. After all the gamblers have either called or dropped out, a further card is revealed on the turn. an additional round of betting ensues and then the river card is flipped. The entrants must attempt to make the strongest high and low five card hands using the board and hole cards.
This is where a number of entrants get flustered. Unlike Hold’em, in which the board can make up every player’s hand, in Omaha Hi-Lo the player must utilize precisely 3 cards on the board, and precisely 2 cards from their hand. No more, not a single card less. Unlike normal Omaha, there are 2 ways a pot might be won: the "high hand" or the "low hand."
A high hand is just how it sounds. It is the strongest possible hand out of every player’s, it doesn’t matter if it is a straight, flush, full house. It’s the same concept in just about all poker games.
A lower hand is more complex, but certainly opens up the play. When deciding on a low hand, straights and flushes do not count. the lowest hand is the worst hand that could be put together, with the worst being A-2-3-4-5. Since straights and flushes don’t count, A-2-3-4-5 is the lowest value hand possible. The low hand is any five card hand (unpaired) with an 8 and lower. The lower hand wins half of the pot, as just like the high hand. When there is no low hand presented, the higher hand takes the complete pot.
It may seem complicated at first, following a couple of rounds you will be able to get the fundamental nuances of play with ease. Seeing as you have individuals wagering for the low and wagering for the high, and since such a large number of cards are being used at the same time, Omaha/8 provides an amazing range of wagering options and because you have several players battling for the high, and a few battling for the low hand.
