Omaha Hi Low: General Outline

Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha/8 or better) is commonly seen as one of the most difficult but well-loved poker games. It’s a game that, even more than normal Omaha poker, aims for play from all levels of players. This is the primary reason why a once invisible variation, has grown in acceptance so rapidly.

Omaha/8 begins exactly like a normal game of Omaha. 4 cards are handed out to every player. A sequence of betting follows where gamblers can bet, check, or drop out. Three cards are dealt out, this is referred to as the flop. Another sequence of wagering happens. After all the gamblers have either called or folded, an additional card is flipped on the turn. Another round of wagering follows and then the river card is revealed. The gamblers must attempt to make the strongest high and low 5 card hands based on the board and hole cards.

This is where some entrants get confused. Contrasted to Texas Hold ‘Em, where the board can make up every player’s hand, in Omaha hi/lo the player has to use exactly 3 cards from the board, and precisely 2 hole cards. No more, no less. Unlike normal Omaha, there are two ways a pot may be won: the "high hand" or the "lower hand."

A high hand is just what it sounds like. It is the best hand out of every player’s, whether that is a straight, flush, full house, etc. It’s the identical approach in almost all poker games.

The low hand is more complex, but really opens up the play. When figuring out a low hand, straights and flushes do not count. the lowest hand is the weakest hand that can be put together, with the lowest value being A-2-3-4-5. Because straights and flushes don’t count, A-2-3-4-5 is the lowest value hand possible. The lower hand is any 5 card hand (unpaired) with an 8 and below. The low hand wins half of the pot, as does the high hand. When there is no lower hand available, the higher hand wins the whole pot.

It may seem difficult initially, following a couple of hands you will be able to pick up on the fundamental nuances of play easily enough. Since you have people wagering for the low and wagering for the high, and seeing as such a large number of cards are in play, Omaha hi lo provides an amazing collection of wagering options and seeing that you have many individuals battling for the high, as well as a few trying for the low hand. If you love a game with a plethora of outs and actions, it is not a waste of your time to participate in Omaha hi-low.
