Omaha Hi Low: Fundamental Outline
Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha 8 or better) is often times viewed as one of the most difficult but well-loved poker variations. It’s a game that, even more than regular Omaha poker, aims for play from every level of players. This is the main reason why a once irrelevant game, has expanded in popularity so amazingly.
Omaha hi/low begins like a regular game of Omaha. 4 cards are given out to every player. A round of wagering ensues in which players can wager, check, or fold. 3 cards are dealt out, this is known as the flop. Another round of wagering ensues. Once all the gamblers have in turn called or folded, another card is revealed on the turn. a further round of betting happens at which point the river card is revealed. The players must attempt to put together the strongest high and low 5 card hands based on the board and hole cards.
This is the point where some entrants can get baffled. Unlike Hold’em, in which the board can be everyone’s hand, in Omaha hi lo the player has to utilize precisely 3 cards from the board, and precisely 2 cards from their hand. No more, not a single card less. Contrary to normal Omaha, there are 2 ways a pot might be won: the "higher hand" or the "lower hand."
A high hand is just what it sounds like. It’s the strongest hand out of every player’s, whether that is a straight, flush, full house, etc. It is the same notion in nearly all poker games.
The low hand is more complex, but certainly free’s up the play. When determining a low hand, straights and flushes don’t count. the lowest hand is the worst hand that could be put together, with the lowest being A-2-3-4-5. Because straights and flushes don’t count, A-2-3-4-5 is the worst possible hand. The lower hand is any five card hand (unpaired) with an 8 and smaller. The low hand takes half of the pot, as does the high hand. When there is no lower hand available, the high hand takes the whole pot.
Although it seems complex at first, following a couple of hands you will be able to pick up on the basic nuances of play easily enough. Since you have individuals wagering for the low and betting for the high, and seeing as such a large number of cards are in play, Omaha/8 provides an amazing assortment of betting options and because you have numerous players shooting for the high hand, along with a few shooting for the low. If you like a game with all kinds of outs and actions, it’s not a waste of your time to participate in Omaha hi lo.
