Omaha Hi-Lo: General Overview
Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha/8 or better) is frequently viewed as one of the most difficult but popular poker variations. It is a variation that, even more than regular Omaha poker, aims for play from all levels of players. This is the chief reason why a once invisible game, has increased in acceptance so rapidly.
Omaha 8 or better begins just like a normal game of Omaha. Four cards are given out to each player. A round of wagering follows where gamblers can bet, check, or fold. 3 cards are given out, this is known as the flop. One more round of betting ensues. Once all the gamblers have either called or dropped out, another card is revealed on the turn. Another sequence of wagering follows at which point the river card is revealed. The players will have to put together the strongest high and low 5 card hands using the board and hole cards.
This is the point where many players can get confused. Unlike Hold’em, in which the board can make up every player’s hand, in Omaha hi lo the player must utilize exactly 3 cards from the board, and exactly 2 cards from their hand. No more, no less. Unlike normal Omaha, there are 2 ways a pot could be won: the "high hand" or the "low hand."
A high hand is just what it sounds like. It’s the best possible hand out of everyone’s, whether that is a straight, flush, full house, etc. It’s the same notion in just about every poker game.
The lower hand is more complex, but really opens up the play. When determining a low hand, straights and flushes don’t count. A low hand is the worst hand that might be put together, with the lowest being A-2-3-4-5. Considering that straights and flushes don’t count, A-2-3-4-5 is the lowest possible hand. The low hand is any five card hand (unpaired) with an eight and smaller. The low hand takes half of the pot, as just like the high hand. When there’s no low hand presented, the high hand wins the whole pot.
While it seems difficult initially, after a couple of hands you will be able to pick up on the basic subtleties of play with ease. Seeing as you have players betting for the low and betting for the high, and since so many cards are being used at once, Omaha Hi-Lo offers an amazing collection of betting possibilities and because you have numerous individuals shooting for the high, and a few shooting for the low hand. If you like a game with all kinds of outs and actions, it’s not a waste of your time to participate in Omaha hi-low.
