Omaha Hi-Low: General Summary
Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha 8 or better) is commonly seen as one of the most complicated but well-loved poker games. It’s a variation that, even more than normal Omaha poker, aims for play from all levels of players. This is the main reason why a once irrelevant game, has grown in popularity so amazingly.
Omaha/8 begins exactly like a normal game of Omaha. Four cards are handed out to each player. A sequence of betting ensues where gamblers can bet, check, or drop out. Three cards are given out, this is called the flop. Another round of wagering ensues. Once all the gamblers have either called or dropped out, an additional card is flipped on the turn. a further sequence of wagering happens at which point the river card is flipped. The gamblers will need to make the strongest high and low five card hands using the board and hole cards.
This is where many entrants can get flustered. Unlike Texas Hold ‘Em, in which the board can be every player’s hand, in Omaha Hi-Lo the player must utilize precisely three cards from the board, and exactly two cards from their hand. Not a single card more, not a single card less. Unlike regular Omaha, there are 2 ways a pot might be won: the "higher hand" or the "lower hand."
A high hand is exactly what it sounds like. It is the best possible hand out of every player’s, it doesn’t matter if it is a straight, flush, full house, etc. It’s the very same notion in almost all poker games.
The lower hand is more complex, but certainly free’s up the action. When determining a low hand, straights and flushes do not count. the lowest hand is the worst hand that might be made, with the worst being made up of A-2-3-4-5. Considering that straights and flushes do not count, A-2-3-4-5 is the worst possible hand. The lower hand is any 5 card hand (unpaired) with an 8 and smaller. The low hand takes half of the pot, as just like the high hand. When there is no low hand available, the higher hand takes the complete pot.
It may seem difficult initially, after a few rounds you will be able to get the fundamental nuances of the game with ease. Seeing as you have players wagering for the low and wagering for the high, and since so many cards are in play, Omaha 8 or better offers an amazing array of betting possibilities and seeing that you have many players battling for the high, as well as a few trying for the low. If you like a game with a plethora of outs and actions, it is not a waste of your time to participate in Omaha/8.
