Omaha Hi-Lo: Fundamental Overview

[ English ]

Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha/8 or better) is commonly viewed as one of the most complicated but popular poker games. It’s a variation that, even more than regular Omaha poker, aims for action from every level of players. This is the chief reason why a once obscure game, has grown in popularity so rapidly.

Omaha 8 or better starts exactly like a regular game of Omaha. 4 cards are given out to each player. A sequence of wagering ensues where players can bet, check, or drop out. 3 cards are handed out, this is referred to as the flop. Another sequence of betting happens. After all the gamblers have either called or dropped out, a further card is revealed on the turn. an additional sequence of wagering happens at which point the river card is flipped. The players will need to make the strongest high and low five card hands based on the board and hole cards.

This is the point where a few entrants get confused. Contrasted to Texas Holdem, in which the board can make up every player’s hand, in Omaha hi low the player has to utilize exactly three cards from the board, and precisely two cards from their hand. No more, not a single card less. Unlike regular Omaha, there are two ways a pot may be won: the "higher hand" or the "low hand."

A high hand is just what it sounds like. It is the strongest possible hand out of every player’s, whether that is a straight, flush, full house, etc. It is the same approach in nearly every poker game.

The low hand is more difficult, but really opens up the action. When deciding on a low hand, straights and flushes do not count. A low hand is the worst hand that might be made, with the lowest being made up of A-2-3-4-5. Because straights and flushes do not count, A-2-3-4-5 is the smallest value hand possible. The low hand is any five card hand (unpaired) with an 8 and lower. The lower hand wins half of the pot, as does the high hand. When there is no low hand presented, the higher hand takes the entire pot.

While it seems complicated at first, after a couple of hands you will be able to pick up on the fundamental subtleties of play with ease. Since you have individuals wagering for the low and betting for the high, and since so many cards are in play, Omaha 8 or better offers an amazing collection of wagering choices and seeing that you have numerous individuals trying for the high, along with several battling for the low hand. If you enjoy a game with a lot of outs and actions, it’s not a waste of your time to participate in Omaha Hi-Lo.
